Custom Hearing Protection in Tucson and Oro Valley

Luckily, there is a solution to protect your hearing from permanent damage. For people who exposed to loud sounds on a regular basis, or for people who are concerned about protecting their hearing in the long term, there is custom ear protection.

Made from molds of your ear, custom ear protection provides the best defense against dangerous levels of noise. While silicon and foam ear plugs do provide some comfort against noise, custom ear protection is personalized to protect your hearing. They also allow you to hear the sounds you want to hear.

Why is custom hearing protection important?

Anatomy of Ear

How Hearing Works

Like our other senses, hearing happens in the brain. Our ears are one part of the process that allows us to take in and register the sounds around us.

The outer ear is responsible for picking up sounds. Sound waves move from the outer ear through the middle ear, where it is turned into vibrations by the eardrum. These vibrations make their way to the inner ear, where they are picked up by inner ear hair cells. Inner ear hair cells are responsible for turning the vibration of sound waves into neural signals. These neural signals travel to the auditory center in the brain, where they are recognized as sounds we have learned to recognize.

Hearing loss occurs when one or more parts of this process do not function properly. The two most common causes of hearing loss are presbycusis (age-related hearing loss) and exposure to noise (noise-induced hearing loss).

The Effects of Loud Noises on Hearing

Our ears are always on. Even when we’re sleeping, our ears are alert – this is why alarm clocks are so effective!

In daily life, we are exposed to layers of sound in our environment, from conversations we’re having to birds outside the window to blares of horns in traffic in the distance. Our ability to hear helps to locate us and keep us safe.

In some instances, we are exposed to loud noise – sometimes without even realizing how loud the sounds are. Many different occupations, from construction to dentistry, expose people to dangerous levels of sound that, in the long term, may lead to permanent hearing damage.
At the same time, a one-time event of loud noise may lead to hearing loss, such as a gunshot, firecracker, or explosion in our proximity. Approximately 60% of service men and women returning from combat zones report cases of hearing loss.

Hearing specialists tell us that exposure to sounds at 85 decibels for an eight-hour period is enough to cause hearing damage. Noise-induced hearing loss affects inner ear hair cells. Once they have been damaged, they do not regenerate. As a result, hearing loss is permanent.
